A SAVVY Barnsley College apprentice enjoyed national news recognition after creating eye-opening content on loneliness.

Katie Cherry, 23, recently created a video for Age UK Barnsley, that shone a national spotlight on the charity’s vital work.

The level three content creator produced a video featuring Raymond, an Age UK Barnsley service user.

Raymond spoke candidly about loneliness and the difference the charity’s groups have made to his life.

The video caught the attention of BBC Breakfast, who filmed an interview with Raymond at his home and at the annual Age UK Barnsley Christmas lunch, at the Holiday Inn.

The young apprentice discovered her passion for digital storytelling after leaving university and starting a book review account - with her hard work boasting the astonishing result of 10,000 followers and even partnerships with publishers and authors.

Katie’s work has already made an impact, with Raymond’s story having touched more than 140,000 views and 14,000 likes.

Recently, Katie also grabbed the Chronicle’s attention, having been nominated for a Young Champions award for her unique approach content.

She said: “It’s lovely speaking to older people like Raymond, hearing their stories, and being there to help them.

“The fact that I can use my content creation and marketing tools to reach so many new people and help people fills me with so much joy.

“I feel like the apprenticeship has really helped me gain that professional side to my work.

“I have created content for my own passions and projects, but I’m now representing an organisation where everything I do has to be inclusive and respectful.

Ben Outhwaite, apprenticeships trainer at Barnsley College, praised Katie’s commitment to making a difference through her content.

He said: “Since starting her apprenticeship earlier this year, Katie has brought a proactive, hands-on approach that’s transformed the way Age UK shares its stories.

“Katie has quickly become invaluable to the organisation and I’m excited to see how she continues to grow in the second half of her apprenticeship.”
