WORSBROUGH Bridge are due to play in finals on Saturday and Tuesday as they look to cap one of the best seasons in the club’s history with some silverware.
They host Wakefield AFC in the NCEL Division One play-off final from 3pm on Saturday – having won 3-0 at home to Leeds UFCA in the semi-final – before taking on Worksop Town in the Sheffield Senior Cup final at Doncaster Rovers’ ground from 7.30pm on Tuesday.
It is the first time Bridge have reached the play-offs in more than 40 years at that level and their first Sheffield Cup final since 1973, having broken club records for wins and points in a remarkable campaign which saw them finish second on 95 points.
Manager Lee Morris told the Chronicle: “It’s been a monumental season for the lads, they have broken all the records they could.
“But if we were to walk away with nothing it would be gutting.
“We can break records but we’re here to win trophies and win promotions.
“We’re really confident and hungry.
“We will focus on trying to win the play-off final then hopefully just go into Worksop with nothing to lose.
“When we started back in June, if someone said in April we would have two finals in three days, I would have thought they were crazy.
“They are a young group but they have this ‘win at all costs’ mentality. They have a real togetherness.
“They are really up for it.”
On Saturday, Jake Squires, Max Skelton and Jake Holdsworth scored in front of a crowd of 460 just after Barnsley faced Bradford at Oakwell.
Morris said: “It was a really good performance.
“If it had been 6-0 or maybe more, they couldn’t have complained.
“It was a good spectacle and good that the fans got behind us.
“It was packed and really busy.
“It was nice to see so many Barnsley fans come down and quite a few Bradford City fans.
“We’re hoping for an even bigger turn-out on Saturday.
“Wakefield are quite well-supported and will fetch a few.”
Wakefield finished third, one place and two points behind Worsbrough.
Morris said: “Wakefield have been pushing for a few seasons, I think they have missed out in the play-offs in the last two seasons.
“They are a big club in this league.
“It’s a bit of a David and Goliath thing.
“We’ve just got to do what we’ve done all season and that’s go at teams.
“The best team on the day will win but we’re in with a massive chance and I don’t think they will be looking forward to coming to us.
“We have prepared right, leaving no stone unturned like doing penalties in training.”
Bridge then take on Worksop Town who play four levels higher than them in National League North.
Morris said: “It will be completely different to Saturday.
“We will play like we always do but Worksop are very very good.
“They beat Peterborough Sports 8-0 in the National League North on Saturday. It will be really tough but we will give our best.
“We will have quite a few lads cup-tied in that game so we will have to put square pegs in round holes.”
