SOUTH Yorkshire Police are urging Barnsley businesses and residents to remain wary following reports around counterfeit currency scams.
In April, officers received 15 reports of people making purchases using fake money.
This saw victims scammed out of over £1,800.
The counterfeit notes are being used across South Yorkshire, generally at smaller shops, taxis or to pay for sales made via online marketplaces.
Fraud protect officer Nicki Robertson said: “We are investigating these reports and are making follow-up enquiries where possible, to gather witness statements and look for potential CCTV opportunities.
“But while our officers carry out these checks to try and take fraudsters off the streets of South Yorkshire, it is important our communities stay vigilant and familiarise themselves with spotting the signs of counterfeit currency.
“If you ever suspect that you have come into possession of a suspicious bank note, please call 101 and report it to us.
“Receiving reports of where and how these fake notes are being used is really important in helping us stop this crime.”
