THE YORKSHIRE Athletics Championships are due to be held at Dorothy Hyman Stadium in Cudworth on Saturday and Sunday.

Some of the best junior and senior track and field competitors in the county will compete for medals with Barnsley AC sending a large team.

There are also several athletes from the town who compete for Rotherham Harriers.

Meanwhile, Graihagh Turner represented Penistone Footpath Runners at the European under 20 Mountain Running Trials, held as selection races for the 2026 European Off-Road Running Championships in Slovenia.

She finished eighth in the uphill-only race at Keswick before and fifth in the up-and-down trial at Sedbergh, missing out on third place by five seconds.

Penistone held the Ian Charlesworth Memorial Hartcliff Hill Race in memory of Ian Charlesworth, a long-standing member and coach at the club who passed away last year.

George Parr led the club home with a fourth-placed finish in 29-53, while Ashley Firth was seventh in 31-13 and James Mumford tenth in 32-10.

Hannah Shaw was first Penistone female, second female overall and first senior female in 35-34.

Josie Smith won the over40 category, Ian Neville was first over60, Julia Johnson was first over60 female and Barbara Haigh first over75, with Matt Robinson first in the over55 category.

Barnsley Harrier Paul Johnson took third place with club-mate Harrison Fordham third under 23.

Lisa Clarkson was second woman with Steve Frith and Paul Wheatley second and third over70 men.

The latest South Yorkshire Road League meeting took place at Worsborough.

Rob Lees led the Penistone club home in 67th place with 32-47. Ian Neville was first over60 in 34-06 and Barbara Haigh topped the over75 category.

Barnsley AC’s Ruby Sunman was first woman in a time of 30-07.

Gavin Walker (over40 man) and Richard Price (over50 man) were second in their age categories in times of 29-51 and 30-15 respectively. Lesley Pickersgill was third over60 woman in 42-08.

Barnsley Harrier Charlie Holt gained another PB as did Adrian Bywater.

Rich Spooner was third over40 man, Fiona Davies was first over50 woman and Rachel Jardine third over55 woman.

The Furty Furlong, a short but tough off-road race at Mapplewell, was held in memory of former Barnsley Harrier and Kingstone Runner David Howes, with more than £600 raised.

Harrier Paul Johnson was first overall, with Rich Spooner first over40 and John Hewitt first over80.

Barnsley AC’s Lennon Hughes finished third in 24-24.

Lesley Pickersgill took the over60 women’s prize in 35-07.

Ian Neville led Penistone home in 14th place in 26-51 with Alan Knox, Callum Page and Steve Dommett completing the Penistone line-up.

Harrier Lisa Clarkson finished 25th in 2-10-18 at the Lakeland Trails Staveley Half Marathon Race.

Barnsley Harrier Kelly Ford was second woman at the Malvern Hills Ultra, a 47-mile race including a total ascent of 2,900 metres, with a time of 11 four and 37 minutes.

At the Cake Race in Oldham, Penistone’s Jemma Williams came 106th in 1-38-48 and third in the over40 category.

At the RunGreno Trail Race, Penistone’s Richard Cottam came second overall in 45-35 and first in the men’s over40 category.

Daniel Rushforth was third over40 in 52-02.

Ian Neville was first over60 in 55-31.

Jay West was the first Barnsley Harrier across the line in 59-36.

Barnsley AC’s Rob Spedding finished the Great Birmingham Run 10k in 46-05.
