DANIEL Stendel is in Barnsley for a quick visit before he begins the head coach job on a full-time basis next month.

The German was re-appointed as Reds boss last week, having previously taken them to promotion from League One in the 2018/19 season.

He ended a four-year spell in charge of Hannover’s reserves – a club where he spent 22 years in total as a player and coach – having led them to sixth in the German fourth tier this season.

He took charge of the final day 2-1 win on Saturday at home to Bremer SV.

Stendel is officially due to start his new job in June but has been in regular contact with the Reds about pre-season plans and the early stages of what will be a major squad rebuild in the transfer market this summer. He visited Barnsley in person this week.

Stendel is thought to be keen to bring an assistant coach with him from Germany but that is yet to be finalised.

Conor Hourihane’s former assistant coach Richard Keogh left the club this week. The 39-year-old was brought in from Blackpool a year ago to work alongside former team-mate Hourihane.

Keogh thanked the Reds for ‘a fantastic learning experience’ and wished the club and fans ‘all the best’.

Set piece coach Ed Davies has been recruited by Premier League Newcastle United. Davies was initially Barnsley’s analyst before being brought onto the bench as set piece coach by Hourihane last summer. After Barnsley had one of the worst set piece records in the third tier in the 2025/26 season, he will now revert to being an analyst with the Magpies’ first team.

Barnsley first team coach Tom Harban – who was an academy coach during Stendel’s first spell – and goalkeeper coach Scott Flinders remain at the club but Stendel’s full coaching staff is yet to be confirmed.
