FAMILIES in Barnsley will benefit from free bus travel for children to help with the cost of living.
A total of £100m has been provided to fund the free fares scheme and also continuing to support bus services.
Every child aged five to 15 will travel free on participating local buses throughout August - with unlimited journeys, no registration required, and at no cost to families.
Sarah Norman, chief executive of Barnsley Council, said: “In Barnsley our young people aged five to 18 already have free bus travel through the MiCard.
“This is really helping our children and young people become more independent, build confidence and access opportunities across the borough and the wider region.
“It’s great to see Barnsley leading the way nationally.”
Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander added: “Free bus travel for every child in August means parents can plan days out, visit loved ones and make the most of the holidays without the added financial pressure.
“We’re making sure public transport works for people, not against them.”
