A GROUP of local artists with learning or physical disabilities officially opened a new exhibition at Barnsley Civic this week to showcase their work.
ArtWorks’ exhibition ‘Now You See Us’ has been launched as part of Learning Disability Week which runs until Sunday.
The aim of the exhibition is to highlight the creative talent of local residents with learning disabilities and to focus attention on their abilities rather than their disabilities.
The featured pieces include a sculpture of Barnsley Football Club, a giant wrestling belt, a cat-art café, and a 1980’s video arcade game inside a model made by Barnsley Men-in-Sheds, alongside a series of paintings, animations and sculptures that are bold, funny, ambitious and skilled.
Kayleigh Cruickshank, founding director at ArtWorks South Yorkshire, said: “This is the first time some of our artists have exhibited their work and we are completely proud of the quality and range of work being shown.
“This is a perfect opportunity to be really seen and that’s what we want for our artists.
“We’re calling them the NBA’s - the New British Artists - because they communicate their view of the world through bold, inventive and sometimes provocative art.”
The exhibition will be on show until July 25.
