WORK on the final phase of a £285m scheme to modernise primary schools started with a turf-cutting ceremony on Wednesday.
Darton, Grove Street, Longcar, Cudworth Pontefract Road and Sandhill primaries are to be replaced and the new schools opened next summer.
In all 13 schools are being replaced with the first opening this summer. A council spokesman said 3,600 pupils will benefit. The work has been funded by a private finance initiative with Mowlem plc.
