Veteran striker Marlon Harewood is the latest player to be released by Barnsley.

The former Nottingham Forest, Aston Villa and West Ham star played 37 times this season but scored just three goals. Harewood, 33, follows Stephen Foster, Rob Edwards, Matty Done and John Rooney out of the Oakwell exit door.

Boss David Flitcroft told the Chronicle: "Marlon was getting ready to go to Rio on holiday after the Huddersfield game and I had a conversation with him about his future. "To get the best out of Marlon you have to put everything through him and make him the main striker. I can't offer him that at this stage of his career in the Championship.

"Marlon's been a great player to have around the squad but I want his football journey to carry on elsewhere."

Flitcroft said it was a difficult decision to release Foster but believes the popular centre-half will have a bright future at another club.

He said: "I've had a family business and have had to get rid of people close to me before. I do these things for the right reasons. Foz, Andy Gray and Rob Edwards are some of the best pros I've ever worked with.

"Foz needed a new direction and a new path and I believe he could charge a promotion at another club. I've got to be honest with players and I want Foz's football journey to continue and I didn't want him to be here and only play a handful of games. He's been a good servant to the club and he will be missed."
