THE decision to withdraw the controversial Market Street school site from an auction has been slammed by a ward councillor.

Coun Trevor Naylor said the U-turn was “absolutely diabolical.”

He said it amounted to council officers overruling councillors who decided it should be sold at a meeting earlier this year.

He added the explanation given for the withdrawal - “legal and insurance reasons” - was not good enough. The public had a right to know exactly what these legal reasons were rather then being fobbed off with jargon.

Coun Naylor, of the Barnsley Independent Group, said: “Something has obviously thrown a spanner in the works but we’re not being told what. Now somebody needs to get their finger out because the problems surrounding the site have been going on long enough. It needs to be resolved and I thought that was the whole point of the sale.”
