A mischievous moggie that follows its owner to work at a supermarket everyday has become a hit with shoppers who stop to give him treats and a stroke.

Bertie the black cat, who is about 18 months old, has become such a regular at Morrisons in Barnsley that customers have even had their picture taken with him.

His owner Michelle Coe, 37, of Princess Street, said he's been following her to work for about a year now and all the customers seem to know him.

"He took it upon himself one day to follow me, he must have followed my scent, and realised there are lots of people down there," she said.

"He loves the attention he gets and customers all pet him and give him titbits."

Bertie's favourite spot to hang about is at the front of the store, near the entrance, or at the back of the building where staff go for breaks.

Some customers have mistaken him for a stray and told supermarket staff about him hanging about outside, prompting Michelle to reassure people he is neither homeless nor unloved.

She said: "I have had a couple of comments saying customers think there is a stray cat outside and things like that.

"To prevent him going down I've tried every method like locking him in the house or tempting him home with treats but he still makes his way.

"I work nights and I don't want to lock him in all night but cats aren't exactly easy to train.

"If anyone could give me any tips which could stop him from venturing down, they would be much appreciated."
