ARMED robbers who escaped with thousands of pounds in cash from Thurnscoe post office fired shots at two drivers who gave chase.
The raiders made off at speed in a stolen car and were followed by Andy Taylor and Nigel Scott in separate vehicles.
The thieves stopped, one of them got out of the car and told the pursuers to back off or he would fire. Nigel, 39, said: We both came to a standstill. When he started shooting I put in into reverse and got out of the way, but he hit Andy's truck."
There was a large number of people in the area at the time and police are appealing for witnesses to try to track down the raiders. No one was injured in the incident.
The drama started on Tuesday when three men waited in a black Vauxhall Vectra in the lay-by outside the row of shops for a cash delivery. When the security van arrived to fill the ATM machine two men in black balaclavas followed the guards into the post office, shouting to bystanders to lie on the floor.
