A CHILD being hit by a car outside Kexborough Primary School has prompted further calls from locals for a new lollipop lady.
A ten-year-old boy was taken to Barnsley Hospital with a suspected broken leg after the incident.
The accident was witnessed by parent Joanne Ashton. She said the driver of the car wasn't going fast.
"I just heard a thud and saw him fall and he was sort of flipped in the air. We've all said it will take an accident like this for the crossing patrol to be brought back."
The accident happened 12 months after school's lollipop lady Maureen Outram retired, prompting a petition by locals calling for her to replaced.
Kexborough executive headteacher Sharon Rossides said there is certain criteria to be met in order for a crossing patrol to be put in place.
She said: "The local authority do regular checks on the volume of traffic on that road (Ballfield Lane) because there is a school here. They always have done.
"At no stage has it been to the point where it would trigger a crossing patrol lady.
"The school has done an awful lot to work with the council and Coun Linda Burgess to try and address the safety of children."
She said much had been done to mitigate the problem of having no crossing patrol, such as yellow 'keep clear' zigzag lines being put outside the school to prevent indiscriminate parking.
