A CHRISTMAS card designed by a Dearne Valley child could be among a display on the mantelpiece at 10 Downing Street.

Every year John Healey, MP for Wentworth, asks one of the primary schools in his constituency to design his Christmas card and 2006 was the turn of pupils at Swinton Queen Street.

He chose the design of a snowman by Robyn Nettleton, 10, and the card has been posted to 1,300, including Prime Minister Tony Blair, Chancellor of the Exchequer Gordon Brown and other top politicians.

It was one of 11 designs selected for the final from 304 entries. The designs of the runners-up, Kelsey Atkinson, Devon Atkinson, Kyle Grice, Amelia Round, Shannon Moore, Leo Kelly, Lana Smith, Brett Yoxall, Johnathan Allen and Shannon Walker, have been printed on the back of the card.

Mr Healey went along to the school on Friday morning to present them with their prizes. The winner received drawing equipment and a framed copy of her design and the runners-up received House of Commons goodies and a copy of the card.

“I would like to thank all the children for taking part,” said Mr Healey.

“I was really impressed by the standard of all the drawings which the children sent to me and it was really hard to choose just one winner.”

Class teacher Mrs Cunningham said that the children were all excited to be taking part .
