THE LONG awaited new road between Park Street and the Wombwell bypass has been opened.

This week the town was taken by surprise when workmen removed the barrier and skip which had blocked the road to deter motorists from using it.

The road, which cuts through the Ben Bailey Homes development, appears to have been ready for months but there has been no official or firm announcement about an opening date. Last week the council said it was expected to be next month.

The road has been constructed by Ben Bailey but their offices in Mexborough are closed because of the Christmas holidays and there was no one available to say why there had been no announcement.

The road is said to be vital to the future of Wombwell, part of its regeneration. But in the past year its opening has been delayed on several occasions.

In August it was said work on all the 58 houses and flats in the development had to be completed before the road could be opened and an October date was suggested. Coun Denise Wilde said yesterday: "If the road is open, we would welcome it. It's long overdue and it's needed for the regeneration of Wombwell."
