AN 89-year-old Goldthorpe woman has been conned out of her savings after trying to help a young woman in distress.
Barnsley police are appealing to the public for help in tracing a teenage girl who turned up at her door with a sob story late on Monday night.
The woman answered the door of her home in Market Street at about 11.30pm to a girl in a dark duffle coat and jeans who told her that her mother was dying and asked to use her telephone.
She took pity on her and left the girl looking through the Yellow Pages, supposedly trying to find out which hospital her mother had been taken to, while she fetched her a glass of water from the kitchen.
When she returned to the living room the girl left in a hurry. She was immediately suspicious and went to the bedroom to find her black bag with £280 in cash and bank cards, but it was missing.
