RESIDENTS in Pogmoor have had their dreams of opening a community centre shattered after a funding application was turned down for the second time.
The Pogmoor Residents' Association want to turn the closed Travellers Rest pub into a community centre which could be used for meetings, luncheons, as football changing rooms and for groups such as mothers and toddlers.
But it has twice been turned down for a grant of £5,000 for a feasibility study from the Old Town Ward Alliance.
Committee members say they were told it was deemed too much money to spend on something which might not come to fruition.
Chairman Annabell Watson said the association had held events including race nights, 'eat and meet', bingo, Christmas carols and 60s' nights but it has been left without anywhere to hold such events since Travellers on Intake Lane closed about a year ago.
The committee is now looking at other ways to fundraise.
A race night has been organised at the Grey Horse on September 26 and a coffee morning will be held on October 10 at 2 Warner Avenue, Pogmoor.
