CALLS have been made to restrict heavy goods vehicles using a narrow street in Barnsley with residents claiming someone could be killed.

Residents living on Higham Common Road say the number of lorries using the road has increased since the Dodworth bypass was built. And fears have been raised that it is only a matter of time before someone is injured or worse.

Glynn Lunn, 73, who has lived on Higham Common Road since 1994, said: "Since the bypass was built all the heavy lorries come down the road which is not wide enough to accommodate them.

"If two lorries have to pass each other one has to go right near the wall where there is no footpath and the other one has to fully mount the footpath where there is then no room for pedestrians to walk. I have been hit twice by the wing mirrors of lorries."

The council confirmed the issue of heavy goods vehicles (HGVs) using Higham Common Road has been a concern for a number of residents for some time.

Coun Roy Miller, cabinet spokesman, said: "Any restriction on Higham Common Road would also have a knock-on effect on surrounding roads and extend to other areas, creating in effect an area-wide HGV ban. Nor is there a suitable alternative route.

"Nationally, funding for new highways and improvements has been cut for the foreseeable future.

"However, the council is aware of this local issue and will continue to explore both short and long term solutions to address these matters."
