A BID for the first phase of funding to create a £3.5m museum in the town hall has been sent to the Heritage Lottery Fund.

The council-backed Experience Barnsley group wants £80,000 to put together a detailed plan for the social and industrial history centre.

The money will pay for designs, costings and an in-depth business plan and a development officer will be hired to co-ordinate the work with help from council staff.

Experience Barnsley chairman and local businessman Terry Sykes is hopeful of success.

He said: “A massive amount of work has gone into this, at least 15 months worth, and the regional Heritage Lottery has been very enthusiastic.”
