PLANS for a new Aldi supermarket and up to 35 new houses at Highgate will go before the council's planning board for a decision next week.

The proposed store would fill in the triangular site between Barnsley Road and the A635, currently sloping fields, with the store facing Hollygrove roundabout.

The council has received five objections - four from local residents and one from Asda in Goldthorpe.

But 44 letters of support have been received including one from Coun Ralph Sixsmith who says he has no problems with the application.

He said: "This is a firm that's bringing up to 400 jobs at the distribution centre across the road, and between 40 and 50 jobs at the store."They sell quality stuff and they are a good employer.

"This isn't just a store, it's for housing as well, and I think the two together will help bring a bit more regeneration and a bit more money into our area."

The proposals are recommended for approval.

A vote will be taken on Aldi's proposals at the planning board meeting at the town hall on Tuesday.
