BARNSLEY Council has advertised for a construction contractor to build the £50m town centre regeneration scheme.

The centrepiece of the town centre's makeover – branded Better Barnsley – will be a new town square, remodelled and extended market halls and a £4m central library.

Shop buildings will be refurbished and the Metropolitan Centre buildings refurbished.

The council has published a contract notice for the work in the Official Journal of the EU advertising for a construction contractor.

All building works are scheduled to be completed by 2017.
