PENISTONE should brace itself for gridlock according to a group opposed to the proposed Mottram bypass.

Woodhead Against Increased Traffic thinks the bypass, together with the controversial Penistone supermarket plan and proposed new housing developments, will bring the town grinding to a halt.

The group's organisers say 1,000 new homes are planned in and around Penistone which would result in an extra 1,500 cars entering and leaving the town each day.

The Tesco supermarket, planned for the old market site, is forecast to bring 800 extra car journeys a day. And they say the new bypass will add to the traffic chaos.

Spokesman Tim Booth said: "WAIT believes that the total effect of these issues will be traffic gridlock and chaos along the A628 corridor and in Penistone itself as the road network tries in vain to cope with this traffic overload.
