A MAN ran half a mile through woodland and a quarry to rescue a security guard who had been trapped in slurry for two hours. Matthew Wilson, 20, was returning to his home at Coronation Avenue, Grimethorpe at about 1am after a night out when he heard faint cries for help. He rushed upstairs to get changed and then ran through the woods towards the quarry on the old Grimethorpe Colliery pit stack. He followed the sound of the cries and found a security man who had been doing his rounds when he slipped into the slurry. The emergency services were called and he then went to find the man’s colleague who, despite being in a cabin 100 yards away, never heard his cries. Matthew fell into the quagmire himself but managed to crawl out and stayed with the stranded man talking to him to keep him calm until help arrived. Fire-fighters used old ladders and ropes to haul out the stranded man who was taken to hospital for a check up. Matthew said: “I was just getting out of the car and shutting the gates; I could hear something in the distance. At first I thought it was a man shouting his dog. “The police said I had risked my own life but I didn’t think about it - I just went to get the bloke out. “On another occasion I might have just gone into the house but there was something in his voice and I could tell it was genuine.”
