A COUPLE from Barnsley celebrated their golden wedding anniversary on Friday.
David Roome, 71, and Hilda, 68, of St Catherine's Way, Pogmoor, have been married for 50 years.
They met in 1961 at St George's Dance Hall and courted for a few years before marrying at St John's Church, Barnsley, in 1965. Both venues have since been demolished.
Now retired, David was a goods driver for British Coal while Hilda worked for more than 20 years at Barnsley Hospital.
They went on to have three sons and five grandchildren who helped them celebrate the occasion with a big family meal. They are now set to go on a cruise of the Mediterranean.
Hilda said: "We were so young when we married, I was only 18, so we have grown up together. There was a lot of give and take but we haven't had to work at it.
"We have had a good laugh over the years and a very happy marriage.'
