A BAKERY which makes almost 140 million mince pies a year is rising to the challenge of training up apprentices.

Manor Bakeries, owned by Premier Foods, is flying the flag for apprentices by setting up a new engineering training centre at its Fish Dam Lane factory, Carlton.

The idea behind the training centre, named in memory of employee Andy Jowitt, is to provide a safe environment for the factory's six apprentices - two of whom are Mr Jowitt's children - to learn how to fix various sections of a production line.

The former machine workshop has been fitted with practice gear boxes, conveyor belts and other small scale food production equipment which they can work on.
