Bobby Hassell scored the opening goal in his testimonial as Barnsley beat Mansfield Town 4-3 on Saturday.
Hassell gave the Reds the lead from the penalty spot on seven minutes then, after his first club Mansfield went 2-1 up, Barnsley trialist David Ball scored an impressive equaliser.
Joe Rothwell, who signed on loan from Manchester United that morning with Ben Pearson, put the Reds 3-2 ahead midway through the second half.
A team of former Barnsley favourites, including eight of the 2006 promotion side, came on after 70 minutes and increased the lead through Daniel Nardiello.
Mansfield pulled one back but the Reds held on in front of an appreciative crowd of several thousand.
Hassell told the Chronicle: "I was a bit nervous before but I felt good in the game and it was a really day for me and for the club."
Josh Scowen won a penalty early on after being tripped in the box. The goalkeeper went the right way for the spot-kick but Hassell found the bottom left corner of the net.
Mansfield were level within two minutes when a free-kick bounced off the home wall and left Matt Green clean through to fire in.
Reggie Lambe put the Stags in front after half an hour when he collected a clever pass on the left of the box and finished from a tight angle.
Ball levelled seven minutes later when a long ball put him clean through and he lobbed the goalkeeper with a fine finish.
Rothwell put Barnsley back in front on 68 minutes with a cool finish from a James Bree cross.
The Bobby Hassell 'legends' team then replaced the current side. David Preece made an astoninishing save to deny Conor Green from close range before Nardiello headed in a cross from Neil Austin on 82 minutes.
Craig Westcarr pulled one back for the Stags with a good finish after cutting in from the left.
