John Ryan hit all the right notes in his application to Leeds College of Music.
The 16- year -old pupil from Darton High School won a place after undergoing a strenuous audition - including a saxophone performance, a sight reading, a theory test and an interview.
He has played the saxophone for just over four years and is now learning the clarinet, piano and flute.
For the last couple of years he has performed at Darton Carnival and he also featured in a sell-out concert held at Darton Church. The teenager also plays for Dearne Big Band.
This week he was interviewed to study music at Barnsley College. If accepted he will make his choice between Barnsley and Leeds. Both offers are conditional and depend on his GCSE results.
He is pleased with his achievement, more so since he only started playing in Y7. Head of music at the school Loraine Cawood said: “It is fantastic that John has been accepted, especially as Leeds takes applicants from all over the country.”
