IS THIS Wombwell's longest engaged couple?
Mary Marshall, 81, and John Bates, 82, met through the Chronicle's Lonely Hearts pages and have since been engaged for 17 years.
Mary, from Aldham House Lane, said without John she wouldn't be here today, as he helped her through a bad accident.
John lives on Wilson Street, and Mary said he is never far away from the telephone. They alternate spending weekends at one another's homes, but Mary said due to their ages the couple won't be getting married anytime soon. They also go holiday together every month.
