LITTER around Barnsley secondary schools has been condemned as “appalling” after an inspection by a group of councillors.
Of the five schools visited, Darfield Foulstone received the most criticism.
The rubbish problem was found to be worse inside the school building than it was outside, and a member of staff who was supervising children was seen dropping a cigarette end.
The inspection by members of the environment scrutiny commission also included visits to Willowgarth, St Michael’s, Edward Sheerien and Priory School.
Councillors took photos of rubbish strewn around the school grounds and surrounding areas, and these pictures were distributed at a meeting last Thursday.
Commission chairman Coun Arthur Whittaker said: “I have to say we were absolutely appalled at the amount of litter that’s around these schools. It’s a big concern.”
