BARNSLEY’S performance at all levels of schooling has been dismissed as “frankly inexcusable” in a damning letter from Ofsted with the council accepting children are being left “disavantaged“ by its performance.

The findings come as a serious blow to the council, which has spent more than £1billion rebuilding many of the town’s schools in a project they insisted would transform education.

Wide-ranging criticisms were made in a letter from Oftsed regional director Nick Hudson - obtained by the Chronicle - which highlight poor performance for all age-groups from primary to A Level students in council controlled education.

He spelled out that at A Level standard “Barnsley achieved an average point score far below that found nationally.”
