CUTS to a substance misuse service which will see 39 people lose their jobs could also have an adverse impact on the council’s ‘good work’ to revamp the town centre, a councillor has warned.

The council’s ruling cabinet has approved proposals to remodel the Substance Misuse Harm Reduction, Treatment and Recovery Service - and cut next year’s budget by £1.9m.

It means 39 full-time employees (42 per cent of the staff) at Phoenix Futures - a drug addiction treatment centre at Burleigh Court - are now facing redundancy.

At the meeting on Wednesday, Coun Roy Miller told cabinet members he was ‘nervous’ about the move, and said it could affect antisocial behaviour and crime in the town centre which was related to substance misuse.
