Barnsley came from behind to win the Johnstone's Paint Trophy final against Oxford United at Wembley on Sunday.
Oxford took the lead midway through the first half but Chey Dunkley's own goal levelled the scores early in the second half then strikes from Ashley Fletcher and Adam Hammill made it 3-1 to the Reds. League Two Oxford pulled one back but League One Barnsley held on to get their first ever Wembley win.
The two sides served up a fantastic game in front of 59,230 people but the Reds came out on top to pick up a first cup win since 1912.
Top-scorer Sam Winnall won his race to return from injury and start, as he took the place of Ivan Toney in the only change from the side that won at Port Vale on Monday. Toney dropped to the bench alongside Marley Watkins who was fit enough to be a substitute but was not needed.
Winnall had the first chance of the game when he beat Oxford centre-back Dunkley but fired badly wide on the edge of the box.
Reds goalkeeper Adam Davies tipped a Jordan Evans free-kick around his post then, following the resulting corner, Alfie Mawson made a great block from a Dunkley effort.
Adam Hammill's dipping 25-yard strike brought a good save out of Benji Buchel in the Oxford goal while Danny Hylton fired wide for the Us.
Oxford eventually took the lead on 28 minutes when Callum O'Dowda outjumped George Williams to head a right-wing cross from Alex MacDonald past Davies and into the right side of the net.
Winnall almost levelled soon afterwards when he hooked another Roberts throw just wide of the right post from eight yards out on the volley.
Barnsley went into the break trailing 1-0 after a disappointing first half but levelled five minutes into the second when Dunkley and Winnall both went to meet an excellent Hammill cross from the left and the Oxford defender headed into his own bottom left corner.
It was 2-1 on 67 minutes when Toney – who had just come on for Winnall – brought down a Williams cross and had a shot that was blocked by John Mullins only for Fletcher to fire the ball into the bottom left corner despite the desperate attempts to clear by Jonjoe Kenny.
The Us almost levelled within minutes but Davies made an astonishing save to fling himself to his right to keep out Liam Sercombe's powerful 15-yard shot with a one-handed stop.
Instead it was Barnsley who got the fourth goal on 74 minutes as Hammill cut in from the left, rounded Sercombe and fired into the bottom right corner from 20 yards.
Oxford pulled one back two minutes later when Hylton headed in a Kemar Roofe cross from the right to make it 3-2. But the Us barely threatened after that and it was the Reds who lifted the cup.
