HEADTEACHERS at Barnsley’s secondary schools are in revolt over the council’s decision to ditch the traditional six week summer break.
School leaders have warned the controversial move to abandon the six week break for council-controlled schools will cause chaos and have a devastating impact on staff recruitment, exams and cause confusion for parents with children at different schools.
Council bosses first gave the go ahead to overhaul the holidays system in March in favour of four weeks and four days in the summer and an extra week in October starting in the 2017/18 academic year. They argued the long summer break can lead to ‘learning loss’.
But the decision came under fire from secondary school leaders who urged a rethink, claiming it had been ‘fleetingly’ mentioned at the end of a meeting when most school heads were not there.
