Barnsley are keeping an eye out for free agents while beginning early negotiations with their top players who are in the final year of their contracts.

The Reds have brought in 18 new players during the summer transfer window, mostly for the first team with some development signings. Seven of the new arrivals came in last week before the Wednesday's deadline. Although there are no longer any emergency loans allowed – a new rule for this season – clubs can still sign players who are unattached.

Head coach Paul Heckingbottom said: "There are plenty of free agents out there but it's pointless bringing one in just to sit on the bench or to cover for injuries. If there are any that jump out who can come in and compete for a starting place then we will look at them.

"But it is pointless bringing in a body just for the sake of it.  The window is shut and I am absolutely delighted with the group that we have got and the competition for places and the strength in depth."

Heckingbottom is more interested in keeping hold of his current players, with stars such as Conor Hourihane, Sam Winnall, Josh Scowen and Marley Watkins all out of contract next year.

"Some little bits have been spoken about but that's between the club and the players. There will be more definite actions taken before Christmas.  By then, there will be a new transfer window coming up in January and our league position will start to become more clear. We will move on to the next stage of planning in terms of keeping players and bringing new players in."
