YOUNG people caught ‘sexting’ need to educated and not criminalised, a police detective has said.

Police figures for Barnsley show that in two years there has been more than 100 investigations into children ‘sexting’, which is where someone uses a mobile phone or the internet to share a sexual, naked or semi-nude image or video of themselves or others, or sends sexually explicit messages.

Detective Sergeant Helena Day, from South Yorkshire Police, said a lot of work is being done to educate young people about the dangers of the trend and a common sense approach is taken by officers when dealing with incidents.
