A PENSIONER was given an unexpected early alarm call when a teenage driver who had been drinking crashed into his house on Sunday morning.

The 77-year-old was just getting up when he heard a bang and found his staircase had been knocked to one side and was buried in a foot of brickwork and plaster dust.

The occupant, who did not want to be named, said he thought something had hit the roof when the house in Pearson Crescent, Wombwell, was shaken with an ‘almighty bang’ at 6.45am.

He said: “I ran to look out of the landing window and I could see a great big van in the garden.

“By the time I looked down the stairs I couldn’t see anything for dust. It knocked a hole in the wall. It’s all shored up now though.

“What’s bothering me is I’ll have to move out when they do the repair work and it might be up to a fortnight.”

A Berneslai Homes spokesperson said the property had been made safe but were unable to say how much it would cost to put the damage right.
