OXSPRING stalwart John Wade this week completed 40 years service on the village primary school’s governing body.

The 80-year-old was presented with a plaque during an assembly on Monday at which pupils shouted for him to continue on the board.

John played a key role in fighting off three attempts to close the school and has now agreed to stay on.

He said: “My grandmother went to the school when it was opened in 1888. My dad went to it, I went to it and my daughter did as well.

“That’s four generations and I think if you have reaped the benefit of something you should put back into it.

“The kids were shouting they want me to carry on. I couldn’t turn that down.”

Assistant head Janet Bell said: “He has been an invaluable asset to the school.

“Even if there is not a meeting on he regularly comes into school to check everything is ok. “He has always had something to offer.”
