:RESIDENTS in 48 Barnsley streets may soon have to pay £10 a year to park their cars outside their houses following a decision by the council to approve two parking zones.

Cabinet approved the move on Wednesday and the council is now going through the legal process of setting up them up in the Honeywell and Oakwell areas.

Lisa Cunliffe, 38, of Thirlmere Road, Oakwell, said: "I don't think it's money we should have to spend. What do we pay our taxes for?"

The scheme will operate from 8am to 6pm. It will cost £75,000 to set up and enforce but the council says that will be met by the charges of £10 a year for one permit, £25 for a household's second permit, and £5 for each book of 25 visitor vouchers. Businesses will have to pay £20 for their permits and £50 for a second.

The council will now advertise the traffic orders to set up the scheme and if there are no objections it will go ahead.

Phil Edwards, 62, of Western Street in the Honeywell Zone, said: "I've got no problem with the scheme itself, apart from on my side of the road, we're going to have to park half on the pavement. I thought that was illegal but apparently the council can do it on their roads. "If I'm expected to drive up onto the pavement, I'm hoping they're going to lower the kerb. I don't want to ruin my tyres."

According to the council's questionnaire, 66.9 percent of people overall were in favour of residents parking in the Honeywell area, compared to 58.2 percent in Oakwell.
