ELSECAR Park has 'set the standard for the rest of Barnsley to follow' after it officially became the first in the borough to be given Green Flag status.

The park received the national award in recognition of being one of the best green spaces in the country.

Mayor and Mayoress of Barnsley, Coun Ken Sanderson and Beryl Sanderson, raised the flag at the ceremony on Saturday.

Linda Webster, from Friends of Elsecar Park, said people in the village were proud of the achievement. She said: "We all think it's brilliant. It's not just a local award, it means it has been recognised nationally and I think it has set the standard for the rest of the Barnsley parks."

The park and reservoir has been a tourist attraction since the 1930s when families would come on the train from Sheffield to escape the grime of the city.

It was given the nickname of Elsecar-by-the-sea after an artificial beach was built around the reservoir for visitors and the spot was equipped with pleasure boats.
