SACKED college lecturer Bob Willerton will not get his job back despite a strike by angry colleagues demanding his reinstatement.
Claims of gross misconduct against Mr Willerton have been withdrawn following an appeal. Lecturers in the University and College Union staged a walkout last week, disrupting classes across the college, and threatened more prolonged industrial action this week if Mr Willerton was not reinstated as head of engineering.
But an agreement was reached between Mr Willerton, the college and the UCU at last week's appeal hearing. It means Mr Willerton will leave Barnsley College and rules out the chance of further strikes over the issue.
A statement issued by the college on Monday said: "After detailed consideration by the principal the following actions were agreed by both the college and Mr Willerton and his union: • The original decision to dismiss Mr Willerton for gross misconduct is withdrawn; • Both parties agree it is in the best interests of both Mr Willerton and the college that he continues his career away from Barnsley College; • Mr Willerton leaves with the best wishes of Barnsley College."
