THE GRIMETHORPE St John Ambulance Cadets have become UK first aid champions.
Captain Carly Whaling, of Queens Road, Grimethorpe, and Katherine Sewell,of High Street, Grimethorpe, both 15, Ellie Robinson, 14, also from High Street, and reserve Shauni Bake from Newland Avenue, Cudworth, attended the Young Grand Prior First Aid Competition at Coton House, Rugby last week. Officer in charge Terry Haynes said: "I'm on top of the world, this is the top award for St John's."
They competed against 20 other teams from Scotland, Wales and Ireland and teams from the army, navy, air force and schools and underwent a three-person team test and three individual tests.
Grimethorpe was the highest scoring team and was awarded the St John Ambulance Team Award rose bowl. Ellie won the Highest Individual Trophy.
Carly won the Young Grand Prior Overall Winner's Award for the team in a 'nerve wracking' tie breaker. Cadet Trainer Alan Crossley said: "The team has trained really hard this year. For such a young team to become champions of the UK. this was a tremendous."
He said all students attending the event were impeccable in their presentation and behaviour and were a credit to their parents, Willowgarth School and Grimethorpe St John Ambulance Brigade.
