BADMINTON players are making a racket about the lack of courts available in Barnsley.

One group used to block book the Metrodome every Friday evening for 10 weeks but management stopped taking the booking because they said they would not be able to honour it. The Metrodome is hired out for private events.

Rob Mason said: "It seems to me the Metrodome is becoming an events facility rather than a sports facility.

"We're ratepayers who paid for a sports facility to be built in Barnsley and that facility is no longer fully available as a sports facility. I can see the economics of it from their point of view. But they are not providing us with a public service." A spokesman said: "The Cardiac Rehab sessions (at Dorothy Hyman) have relocated from the Metrodome, which has freed this larger venue up for casual bookings of its sports facilities, which it was believed would ultimately cause less disruption to customers and help to increase participation in physical activity."
