LITTLE Walter was the nightwatchman when gas pipes were being laid from Manvers Main to Barnsley in the mid-1950s.

A popular figure, Walter (surname not known) lived in a hut and moved from place to place as the works progressed until they eventually finished in Barnsley. He kept himelf warm on an open fire.

It is understood he previously worked with a travelling circus.

Trevor Catling, of Wombwell, who was only a young boy when the work was taking place, still remembers Walter as he used to fill his lamps with paraffin.

He has loaned to us a photograph of Walter taken outside one of the workmen's huts, believed to have been situated in Hollowgate, West Melton.
