A SIX-MONTH-OLD boxer cross left with a massive hernia since birth is in need of a new home.

Ernie was rescued by Barnsley and District Animal Welfare (BDAW).

Paul Silver, of BDAW, said: "He's very frightened at the moment and I don't think he has been treated too well. This hernia should have been sorted by now." Ernie is due to have the umbilical hernia, which almost is the size of a cricket ball, removed at a cost of between £300 and £400.

Paul said the hernia didn't seem to worry Ernie and added: "He's very friendly and warm but also very scared and bewildered."

He won't be able to rehome the dog, who was rescued with a pit bull terrier, for at least six weeks until he has fully recovered from his operation. Paul added: "It could take weeks for him to come round, it could take months but he could always be a friendly dog, it would be down to whoever takes him on to work with him."
