STAFF at a Barugh pub have been made redundant this week because a road closure has killed off trade.
All five bar workers at the Millers Inn on Dearne Hall Road were handed their cards and told tomorrow night would be their last.
Barman Jordan Scothern, 22, has worked there for 11 months and is concerned because he has recently acquired a mortgage.
“I’m disappointed and a little bit worried. I bought a house a few weeks ago and have bills to pay.”
Lizzi Brown, 20, returned from holiday on Tuesday morning to be greeted with the news.
“I received a phone call that evening to say I would be finishing Saturday night. “I’m feeling a bit depressed. I’m at college training to be an accountant - this doesn’t look good for my accounts.”
Landlord Wayne Stephenson, who took over the pub at the end of March, took the decision to let his staff go following the closure of Dearne Hall Road last Monday.
He said he lost nearly £2, 000 last week and has no other choice. “It is not possible to run the pub on my own but I can’t afford staff on the money the pub is taking.
“It is desperate measures for desperate times.”
