WASTE plastic will soon be collected at the kerbside by bin men and recycled, if Barnsley Council plans go ahead.

It will mean householders get a new bin for plastic on top of the four they already have for different kinds of waste.

Household plastic has never been separately picked up by council bin wagons because of several factors - not least the fact it was not cost effective. But that is expected to change next year.

A council document states: "Feedback has been received from residents and members about kerbside plastic recycling. There will be further opportunities for stakeholders to comment as the scheme rolls out."

Coun Bill Newman, spokesman for development, said the plans needed developing. "We are not yet in a position to give any details as there is still a lot of work to do behind the scenes to make this viable, but we are pleased with the progress being made and hope to take a detailed report to cabinet for consideration of the implications early in the new year."
