Barnsley College students marched '500 miles' to Oakwell yesterday as part of a charity music video project.

The project involved 500 staff and students who marched the mile from Honeywell campus to Barnsley Football Club to the song ‘500 Miles’ by the Proclaimers.

Students sported face paint, fancy dress and tied themselves together for the walk.

Performing arts student Josie Gibbons, 17, who was tied to her friend Laura McKenzie, 18, said: “We’re always up for doing stuff for charity. We’re always having fun and raising money.”

At Oakwell the staff and students were greeted by Toby Tyke, who danced about for the cameras.

Head of music Richard Tolson, who is overseeing the project with help from colleague Tim Speight, said: “The students were in the stand with Toby Tyke and they were all singing along to the track which was played over the PA system. We have lots of people singing lots of different lines on it. The musicians have recorded the backing track and individuals sing on the track as well.”

This is the college’s third annual charity music video. It will raise funds for Barnsley Hospice and will also raise awareness for the cause by being posted on YouTube.

All departments have got involved in the project, which involves singing, playing instruments, filming and editing.

Mr Tolson said: “Even the people that can’t sing have been turned into pop stars with some auto tuning.

“Each year it seems to grow. Students are really enthusiastic and up for raising money for Barnsley Hospice. The standard of work and quality of recording will impress everyone who watches it on YouTube.”

The video will be premiered at the college’s Excellence Awards night on June 30.
