A £2.1m sports centre built five years ago will be flattened unless it is taken over.

The Kingstone School Sports Centre was built using lottery funding in 2006 but will 'cease to be required' when the Kingstone School closes in September next year.

The council said it was looking for other uses for the building but admitted the site could be cleared for other developments.

Opposition councillor Bill Gaunt said it would be a huge embarrassment for Barnsley if it was knocked down when the country was gearing up for the Olympics.
