LITTLE Michael Keen has finally returned home following a four-month hospital stay after being involved in a fatal collision which killed his grandfather just days before Christmas - and the community are already getting behind him as much as they can.

At 11.41am on Sunday December 22, officers were called to West Street, Worsbrough, to reports of a collision involving a car and two pedestrians.

Leon Yould, 56, died at the scene while his grandson Michael was taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries.

The young fighter, who is now 17 months old, remained at Sheffield Children’s Hospital for four months before finally returning home with his mum, 21-year-old Isabel, on April 11.

Isabel, from Worsbrough, told the Chronicle: “His injuries included a fractured skull and a bleed on the brain.

“His spinal cord ripped and he had a fractured vertebrae and fractured hip which has resulted in brain damage.

“It was a lot to deal with, there was a lot of stress.

“He was in ICU for four weeks until he finally turned a corner.

“He had eight surgeries throughout his hospital stay.

“He’s managed to just get better and better from then.

“He’s got some brain damage but he’s doing well - his movement isn’t great at the minute.

“He came out of hospital two weeks ago.

“They didn’t think that he would make it but he’s such a fighter - he’s been through a lot.”

Isabel says the last four months have been incredibly difficult but have thanked the community for their support - and multiple fundraisers have raised thousands to support them.

From raising £4,500 by completing a sponsored run around York Racecourse to multiple other fundraisers at The Outpost and Worsbrough Bridge FC - the community has really rallied around the family.

“We were going backwards and forwards from home to the hospital so there was a lot of stress,” she added.

“But we’ve got a lot of family who helped us.

“Michael being in hospital helped us focus on something else.

“We haven’t really had the chance to grieve for my dad yet.”

And just over a week after returning home, the community rallied together on Wednesday as Darren Morton - of Inked To Morte Tattoo Studio in Grimethorpe - hosted a fundraising day to support the family.

Darren, alongside Alexandria Turner, tattooed cartoons for those in attendance with all the money going to Isabel and her family.

Isabel added: “I’ve known Darren for quite a while.

“It’s really good how the community has managed to come together.

“It’s helped me throughout it all.

“It shows a lot about the area.”

Darren and Alexandria managed to raise a total of £585 on the day after completing 11 tattoos - and Darren even got involved himself.

He told the Chronicle: “When I heard about the collision I was devastated.

“I know it was said that little Michael might not pull through - but he’s made improvements and the doctors have done their best.

“I said that we needed to do something for the family.

“I sat with Lexi and we decided that we were going to do a fundraiser.”

Having discussed ideas with the family, the pair decided they would tattoo cartoon characters - from Mickey Mouse to the Rugrats - and they’re glad the money is going to a good cause.

“I’d have loved it if we’d have been able to do a bit more,” he added.

“But in total we did 11 tattoos.

“Everybody helped and people were just coming in to donate.

“Anything we can do to help is a weight lifted from the family which is what we want.

“That baby is going to need every bit of help he can get.

“I love the whole community spirit.”
