THE daughter of a Barnsley FC legend was delighted to receive a Reds shirt to take back with her to Chile.
Liz Robledo, whose dad George broke through at Oakwell before making a move to Newcastle United and winning two FA Cups, including one with his brother Ted, has been in England for a four-week period as part of a promotional tour on a book about his successes, called Postcards From Santiago by Spencer Vignes.
Liz said her dad, who was half Chilean, had a huge affinity for this area after being raised in West Melton.
She was pleased to receive the shirt off Barnsley FC and said it will be used in an exhibition in her homeland next year.
“It’s always emotional being back in South Yorkshire.
“It is so special to get the Barnsley FC shirt because I did not have anything Barnsley and it was a special place for him.
“The place where he started.
“Now we can show the Chilean fans this very special shirt.
“We are going to display this next year as it is the 100th anniversary of my dad’s birth and we are planning some exhibitions and this is, of course, going to be there.
“South Yorkshire is really, really special in my dad’s history and I feel it whenever I am back here.
“The ways I feel connected to the UK are special and I feel like I am at home here with another family.”
Liz visited the blue plaque in West Melton which marks the house in which her father and uncle Ted were raised.
